An industrial town situated in the forested region of the Vimperská Vrchovina highlands at the foot of mountain Boubín. It is of mediaeval origin and flourished due to its position on the Golden path. A chateau situated on a steep rock, originally an Early Gothic castle from the 13rd century which underwent reconstruction and adaptation in later years, looks down on the town. The local church of St. Mary from the 14th century has the appearance lent it by its reconstruction in the 19th century. The Vimperk printing works has a tradition of whole centuries´ standing.
